“Previously controlled by the Spanish, the Western Sahara was annexed by Morocco in 1975, leading to a bitter 16-year-long conflict that ended with a UN-brokered ceasefire in 1991. Yet to this day, the territory remains occupied. The Saharawi people, many of whom now live in exile, are subjected to continued abuse, repression, and human rights violations.” R.R.

Reuben, a visual anthropologist and photographer, explores issues of urban culture, transnational migration, and the challenges of living in a global capitalist economy. Some of you may remember him from issue two of Witness! zine. Here, his photograph of bubblegum colour homes in the Western Saharan town of Dakhla holds a darker narrative running through its streets.

Only two prints exist - one is here, and the other is hung in Reuben’s living room.
